Some Requests:
(1) At the push of a hotkey a popup window allows my to search my connected reference management system (e.g. Zotero) and add this citation inline.
(2) Within this same popup window, below the search box, a list of all the citations already added to this document for easy selection via arrow keys.
(3) Newly added citations should add the reference, in pre-specified format, automatically to a Reference section at the end of the document. (Where this section is created if not already existing).
(4) References which have no corresponding citation, perhaps lost during the editing processes, should be highlighted to indicate that the reference is missing a citation.
To add to the complexity - I think it would be sweet if the referencing and citations could be automatically linked, so once I put in a citation, it pulls up a box to insert my properly written reference and then adds it to the reference page for me. Then, if I were to delete that paragraph or remove the citation, it would simultaneously delete it on the reference page. I know this would be difficult, but I don't know of any processors that do this automatically. Regardless, Essay is the best thing to happen for writing in a VERY long time. Thanks Julian and team!
Some have already noted footnotes. I would like to raise my hand for that too.
Additionally, can we have the ability to do sub-outlines? That would help with long essays or writing a thesis. I think there is a way around it, i.e treat every chapter or a major section of a chapter as an essay in and of itself, but I would prefer if I didn't have to detach one piece from the whole like that.
It might be useful to have an API that searches for the author/paper name and references it properly based on the writting guide (i.e., APA, Harvard). For example: www.semanticscholar.org/product/api
If you would like this tool to be truly suitable for academic writing, one critical feature to implement is the integration of a reference management system. (e.g. Zotero). Without such a plugin, one has to go back and forth between Word and the Essay platform.
I think it would be interesting to include an extension or add-on on the editing page that connects with a bibliographic reference manager (ZOTERO, Mendeley, etc.). In this way, during the construction of ideas (probably in the "Produce" and "Rewrite" area), we can introduce bibliographic references.
My essay will probably make no sense to people not the same age or from Australia. Need the ability to supply endnotes, so as to not to distract from the story so to speak. And a place to put a bibliography, particularly when you talk about someone else's work.
I use Essay to write research grant proposals, so bibliography is continually cited. I would appreciate if you considered the possibility of adding an extension to allow working with reference manager softwares, such as Zotero. This improvement would be very useful also for the desktop app.
I understand that implementing an API could be cumbersome, however, a good starting point would be to simply integrate endnote/footnote functionality for references.
I purchased an annual subscription to Essay today. I am incredibly happy about the program thus far. Thank you to the team for creating such a powerful and useful tool.
For academic papers i need to put in footnotes, but there is not such feature in essay. I end up putting he footnotes between brackets in the text, because otherwise i'd forget where goes what. Then copy it to word and put the footnotes there. Really double work.
Would also love to see footnotes and quotation option in general. It is lacking for academic writing and would make this platform amazing to use for essays.
I love to use this for academic essays however it really disappoints me theirs no ability for referencing and is the only thing holding me back from using it full time
Concur... impossible to use efficiently for academic writing without footnote / bibliography capability. I have to quickly transition back to Word. Please add this functionality!
Agreed - I love the app and conceptually how it is put together, but without the ability to organize references (bibliography, footnotes, etc.) it becomes very cumbersome for academic writing and I find myself switching back to Word fairly early in the process.
Yes it would be great to have a way of adding notations directly in the text elements for references. So that when we are completed the references appear at the bottom of the article in the order they were mentioned. These would change as and when the author does a re-write to reflect the new order of references.
Would be great to add footnote links, URLs, and even to parts of the text to link ideas and double check meanings.
For example... in one paragraph I write
"...This helps people see things from a different perspective and even experience a new reality. A 'new reality experience' will push people forward in time into a new way of being by way of focusing on what they want to achieve thus changing the trajectory of their life as it takes a different turn of events had they not had those specific thoughts..."
and in the next Subheading topic I write
"...The mechanisms for creating a new reality are such that they embed new encodings into the deep neurology of the systems they affect. These mechanisms are wired by the fusion of electrical impulses that fire off in response to specific stimuli. They learn that this response is required for the immediate action afforded by the situation. So in effect, the brain is creating new pathways of existence by melding one neuron to another in ways that produce the desired outcome. This in turn brings new neuronal connections in support of the new trajectory. In this sense, we are building a new community of neurons that give structure and systematic programming abilities to support a new direction of thinking, being and doing."
The word here is 'trajectory' - it would be good to mark this word to be able to refer back to it in order to check the meaning of when it was originally mentioned.
Great comment. I would love to be able to reference footnotes, appendix, bibliography. For example, when I want to add a reference for a book, study or link it would be great to incorporate it 'there and then' in the text. Then when we want to view the references we can get a neat layout at the bottom of the article (perhaps a like the outline tool) to show all the references in the order they were linked in the article. These would move according to the re-write order change as and when the author decides
Especially when working on essay’s for school, this feature is imperative. I understand this is probably a monumental task that requires a lot of work but the upside for consumers is huge!
I agree on this one, keeping references in check is so important to not lose track of your research and avoid wasting time re-looking into your references. For me, this is a critical feature.
Perhaps also have a system where files are kept from which one is bringing his references. Images, links, PDFs (with OCR), etc... so that all the reference material is in a single place
I second this! Not just for referencing, but for overall formatting. Specifically one that allows you to choose the exact format style in which you want to write. APA, Chicago, MLA, Turabian, etc.. This would be an invaluable tool.
Yeah, and I make a lot of cultural references, as well as talk about other people's work and need to do a bibliography. So after something like end notes....

This should be the number one thing in development at the moment if it is to be used as a serious academic tool. Please get on it! :)

Can't write my essay in the app as can't add footnotes!

The need for footnote is real. It is an important part of idea organization and description.
Thank you. Best regards.

Yep, this isn't good for me without reference management systems, such as CMOS so, hopefully, you'll be adding this option shortly..?
